Summary about horsemen police in UAE – by Saif Jassim Al Zaabi

A group of horsemen police roam around through the desert looking for trouble makers. The horsemen police wear traditional headgear around their forehead to protect them from unpredictable weather changes. These horsemen are part of RAK’s police patrol division that looks after the outside areas of the city which are unreachable by cars; as well these horsemen use mobile phones and walkie – talkies.
The horsemen use silence and stealth during their patrols which will assist them in noticing anything unusual or suspicious. Sometimes buggy drivers try to frighten the horses which is unfortunate, but the horsemen retain their equanimity.
Most of the horsemen are Indians and they go out in groups of six or seven, covering as much ground as possible. The horsemen take a break during summer when rarely any people go to the desert.
Some of the horsemen’s tasks are to help the police in arresting fugitives and drug dealers.
Most of the horsemen shifts are for four hours and sometimes more, so to avoid exhausting the horses during their patrol in an area like Al Awafi, they transport these horses from the stables to the maximum cars can reach, and before going back to the stables, the horsemen calm down the horses by whistling to it.
